Start With Your Bottleneck

If your bottleneck is coordinating a larger change, evaluate how each candidate keeps scope and context under control. If your bottleneck is reviewing incoming changes, evaluate how each fits your existing review process. Product names alone do not settle that decision.

This is a repeatable evaluation plan, not a hands-on benchmark or a claim that one service produces better code. Keep your current review and test process as the baseline. A third valid outcome is that neither candidate improves it.

Run One Small Repository Task

Choose an existing bug with a reproducible failure, a narrow fix, and no production credentials. Create two clean copies at the same commit. Give both candidates the same request, available context, permitted commands, and time budget. Do not let the second candidate see the first result.

Use a brief like this:

Task: fix the reproducible failure described below.

Tests required:
Ask before installing dependencies, using network access, or publishing.
Deliver the diff, validation output, and any unresolved assumptions.

Compare Evidence, Not Confidence

Record human review time separately from generation time. A fast draft can still require substantial correction. Repeat on another representative task before generalizing from one outcome.

Check Cursor pricing and GitHub Copilot plans on the day you test. Record the plan, enabled capabilities, usage settings, and any limits that affect your workflow. This guide does not assume equal model access, pricing, or deployment options.

Do not upload restricted repositories or secrets without authorization. Review new dependencies, license obligations, generated code, and security-sensitive changes with the responsible people.
