Example tasks
- Adding a browser interface to a model backend
- Evaluating a self-hosted chat workspace
- Reviewing local versus remote model connections
Check before use
- The interface requires a model backend and is not itself an LLM
- Remote providers, search, and extensions can send data off the host
- Authentication, updates, file permissions, backups, and network exposure are your responsibility
- Check branding and distribution terms; do not assume unrestricted white-label use
Interface, not model
Open WebUI supplies a self-hosted interface that can connect to local or cloud model backends. The official overview describes connections such as Ollama. Installing the interface alone does not tell you where prompts are processed; inspect the backend you configure.
A useful first trial
Use a private test installation and a non-sensitive prompt. Verify which model answered, where it ran, and which optional tools were enabled. If local-only use is the goal, review the full chain, including document processing, search, and extensions.
For a local runtime to connect, see Ollama. For a desktop alternative with a different setup burden, compare LM Studio.
Before sharing a deployment
Follow the quick-start documentation and review authentication, updates, backups, and network access before inviting anyone. Do not expose an experimental server with private documents or secrets.
Check the current license, especially before changing branding or redistributing the interface. Official sources were reviewed on October 3, 2026; this page is not a deployment security audit or legal assessment.
